Diablo 2: Resurrected will be released on all major platforms on September 23, 2021, and Blizzard — which, along with its parent company Activision, is still digging itself deeper and deeper into a legal hole — appears committed to improving the game through regular updates. It announced today the upcoming Patch 2.4, which is expected to be released early next year.

The promise of new Diablo 2 runewords is perhaps the most exciting development for a game that hasn't seen new content since about 2010. Though we don't have many details at this time, Blizzard claims that these have never been seen before in the game. In addition to new runewords, it is expected that new Horadric Cube recipes will be added as well. Set items will play a role in these new recipes, and there will be opportunities to upgrade sets in order to make them more potent.

Classes are also getting some attention in Patch 2.4, with skills that are rarely used being looked at and tweaked to make them more appealing to the player population. Examples include the Amazon's Impale and Fend skills, as well as the Barbarian's throwing abilities, which appear to be getting a boost. Each class appears to be getting a glow-up in its own unique way, according to the photos.

One of the most difficult aspects of Diablo 2 is the use of mercenaries, with the Act 2 version of the game essentially being the only one capable of completing end-game content for most classes. This appears to be changing as a result of improvements made to the mercenaries by other acts of violence.

Quick-cast skills will now properly target allies and corpses, and activating an aura with a quick-cast skill will no longer prevent player characters from moving. This is due to the release of Patch 2.3.1. It also makes it easier to cast skills like Inferno and Arctic Blast in a hurry; melee skills activated with quick-cast will now allow the player to move outside of a town when they are activated with quick-cast. Patch 2.3.1 is now available for download on PC and consoles, with the exception of the Nintendo Switch version, which will receive the update at a later date.
